SABAKAIDO TRAVEL was founded in 2022 by the Obama Tourism Bureau to help travelers venture beyond the over-touristed sites and explore new frontiers of wonder and discovery.
Drawing from the best the region has to offer in the way of culture, nature, and outdoor activities, we craft tours that combine sumptuous cuisine, unique stays, and cultural immersion with customizable levels of adventurousness to suit your preferences and abilities.
About the Saba Kaido
The Saba Kaido – or “Mackerel Highway” – is a network of roads connecting Kyoto to the shimmering waters of the Wakasa Bay and the historic port town of Obama. Even before Kyoto was Japan’s capital, Obama served as a gateway to the outside world. It received trading ships, technology, religious beliefs, and art forms from the Asian continent, while the refined culture of Kyoto also found its way back to this once bustling seaport.
During the Edo period, these roads were used primarily for transporting Wakasa Bay’s rich bounty of seafood to the former capital, thus the moniker “Saba Kaido”.
